What to do if you have a stalker?

Notify the police.

Get a restraining order.

First of all before you do anything you may want to think about the situation. If you know them personally, have known them for years, or are close friends with them, ask them to please leave you alone, and say that they might be scaring you. Knowing you feel discomforted can usually makes them more reasonable. The person may just be a someone from school that just simply likes you.

But,if the the stalker is a complete stranger, its safe to say you should NOT talk to the person unless its completely necessary. You don't know what kind of a threat they are. Go to a place where there are other people, call a parent, a friend, or even the police if you are scared for your life. Use that smartphone you likely carry with you everywhere and get video evidence. Make sure to your "admirer" that you clearly do not want him around, and get him kicked out of your life. Extreme cases call for nothing short of a restraining order.

Keep in mind, however, that a restraining order is nothing more than a piece of paper, another hammer in the bag to hit your stalker with IF he actually does something. It does not prevent him from doing anything so is no form of security.

Many will give you the silly suggestion that you should get a gun, learn how to use it, and obtain a CCW. Such advice is patently ridiculous for one reason: when faced with a high stress situation which might call for the use of defensive measures, about 99% of the population will flip out and completely forget any training they have received, making firing a weapon as dangerous for that person as the public at large. Nothing is harder than trying to level a gun on a charging threat, and effectively operating that weapon to end that threat. And, unless you are a quick-draw artist, the likelihood that you will be able to draw your weapon, or even find where you are carrying it when faced with an immediate threat is just about zero. So, unless you plan on putting in about four hours a day of interdiction weapons training in a variety of different scenarios, AND walking around with your gun in your hand so you can be ready, don't waste your time, or put the rest of us in jeopardy.

• It is very serious when a stalker becomes obsessed and they can be extremely dangerous even if, at first they stay far enough away from their victim for awhile. However, some stalkers are ticking bombs and could harm the victim to even kidnapping and the very worst murder (they don't want their victim to have anyone else in their life, but themselves.) Often stalkers fantasize over their victim and believe in only how they view the victim which is often not the true personality of the victim at all. Example: The victim could have simply been nice to the person one time and the stalker will feel that is a sign that person is in love with them. Before long the stalker can come to believe that person is meant for them only and will not allow (including the victim) to jeopardize the stalker's dream of being together. The victim should keep any letters; notes; emails; cell phone messages as proof of the obsessed stalker. If need be take pictures with your cell phone when the stalker turns up at several places you are at. Then take this to the police and file for a 'Cease and Desist Order' (which, unfortunately isn't worth the ink written on this document) but, it may just stop the stalker and it will help you if this should ever go to court. Be extremely careful (even if you are a man) of walking alone and try to be with at least one person or a group of people; don't park in underground parking; make sure your windows and doors are locked and keep your cell next to your bed for any emergency that should arrive. Let family and friends know who the stalker is.

Dealing with someone whom is repeatedly attempting to contact you despite your refusal to have anything to do with this person (whether stranger or known to you) is not easy.

If the person is an annoyance more than anything, having a direct conversation with them in a public place is a good idea.

HOWEVER, if you feel unsafe with this person's unwanted attention, especially if you know that they are watching you- asking people about your activities, etc- or if they have had trouble with others in this regard, then go to the police immediately, and have a restraining order taken out so that they get the message "LOUD AND CLEAR".

It then becomes a felony for this person to contact you, or to contact you through ANY other person. (such as calling your sister to "see how you are")

There are people who volunteer at the courthouses in the USA and serve as incredibly helpful folks to support you in the process of getting and keeping a restraining order.

Stalking is often joked about- but it is NO laughing matter. People who "stalk" others are mentally ill, and they believe that whatever you do IS their business.

It is not, and the only way to deal with people like this is to tell them firmly through the law or through a frank conversation (don't be afraid to be VERY direct- as trying not to hurt their feelings is not an issue- your safety is!)

If they respond with any words other than "I am sorry, I won't bother you again" then you absolutely should get the law involved.

tell them that you are a convicted murderer and you have fantasies of violently raping your victims and you are thinking of making her next. that should take care of it.
