A very good book about speaking skills is: Hamlin, Sonya, How to talk so people listen : what works, what doesn't and why, Publisher London : Thorsons, 1993, c1988

It is just great that you considered improving your language skills. Be constant in your efforts and patient too. It may take a while, but you sure can do it!

Tips:

Listen to good English and read good English. Good input will influence your own performance after some time.

Write on any topics everyday.

Work on your grammar if you have to.

1. Writing is a medium of expression & often an innate quality in some people who use the exact expressive words , text, style, form, syntax in a language as a genre of writing to write.

2. To become a better writer the three areas of refinement are , by appropriate use of expressive words to convey the semantics , edit the redundant words/sentences, & adopt a style that is unique can make a better writer.

3 The command of a language the writer wishes to write in has to be improved by constant practice & refinement.

Some More Opinions:

**Note - the fact that I had to take 10 minutes to correct grammar and punctuation on the following opinions proves my point that you need to work to be a good writer**

Read a good short (page or so) piece of literature, and then write 3 words per sentence to help you remember that sentence. Rewrite the piece of literature in your own words. This may seem like a lot of work, but it works wonders

You can go for the hard stuff, but you could just do this:

Step 1: Write a story of any kind you want

Step 2: ask your friends to read it

Step 3: ask for feedback

Step 4: write more with feedback

Step 5: be done with your first try or first book, and then move on to your second book. This first book was a way to get feedback and fix mistakes you would have made.

Step 6: do steps 1-6 again but step 5 is now "Try to publish your book if you feel it's ready or try the steps again if you don't."

Writing is hard work - don't fool yourself into thinking good writing just comes down from heaven! Asking your friends to read is good - but how do you know what to change to make the book better? If you don't work and research, how are you going to know how to improve?

The answer to this question is rather subjective and depends on your goals. Do you want to be a good writer to sell your writing to a publisher? Do you want to be a good writer to sell your writing services to others? And what constitutes good writing to you? The obvious answer is to practice your writing. Take a class, get a mentor, join or start a writing critique group. Write every day. Have others give you feedback and listen without taking it personally.

READ YOUR WRITING ALOUD. IF IT'S A GRADED ASSIGNMENT, HIRE SOMEONE (LIKE INSTAGRADING.COM) TO CHECK YOUR WORK BEFORE HANDING IT IN FOR A GRADE. THEN READ IT AGAIN!

How to Improve your Persuasive Writing

You should always have a hooker, which attracts the reader, at the beginning of your writing. You CANNOT forget to address your reader's concern and your counter argument. You can improve your persuasive writing with a lot of "sparkling" vocabulary, such as sophisticated, and ect. The reader has to feel as if you're talking to him/her. So if you want to improve your writing, do NOT just write down facts. And do NOT say at the end, "This is what I wanted to say. Make it INTERESTING..........

  • Make an idea page where you jot down all of the ideas that pop into your head
  • Begin with writing from your own experiences
  • If you feel like your thoughts are skipping around, leave some room to go back and insert new ideas.
  • A writer friend of mine, when her mind goes blank at a spot, simply writes "Insert XX here" (X means whatever scene she thinks should go there, like Argument, Murder, whatever) and keeps on writing. She goes back later and inserts "XX."
  • Read, Read, Read! The more you read, the more you see how other writers write, and the more familiar you will be with how it's done.
  • Be observant! Good writers are actively aware of the world around them, and thus always open to new ideas.

Here are some pointers:

  • Read, read, read. Read as much as you can get your hands on. Read all types of literature and writing styles. Find your favorite writing style and practice emulating it.
  • Write something every day. Keep a writing journal and update it daily. Write about anything and everything.
  • Set a goal. Write a certain number of pages or words every day. You can always go over this goal if you are really in the mood to write.
  • Learn the rules. Learn how to use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and don't depend on a computer program to do it for you. Computers can make mistakes; if you know how to speak and write proper English, you will be a better writer.
  • Observe. Good writers are good observers. Keep a notebook with you, and jot down descriptions of what you observe, bits of interesting conversation that you hear, smells and sounds you notice, and ideas that come to you.

Writing has nothing to do with publishing. Nothing. People get totally confused about that. You write because you have to - you write because you can't not write. The rest is show-business. I can't state that too strongly. Just write - worry about the rest of it later, if you worry at all. What matters is what happens to you while you're writing the story, the poem, the play. The rest is show-business.
Peter S. Beagle

Additional pointsWrite as if you are talking to your friends - don't try to be "literary" or "stylish." A good writer puts things in their own words, which means writing it down the way you would say it out loud.Writing grammatically is, of course, essential. Another quality that a writer needs to develop is the ability to imagine the likely audience and write appropriately for it, getting things like level(s) of formality just right. Well written books, whether academic or fiction, should always be reader friendly.Read a lot, and sometimes read critically. For example, after reading a widely acclaimed work, ask yourself, 'Why is this book highly regarded?'Also consider the fact that gender and age typically has nothing to do with the quality of one's work as a writer.Write what you know, and if you don't know what you want to write about, research. Ray Bradbury earned all of his education in the library of UCLA college, in other words, he was self-taught. We're all human. If it "was" done, then it can be done. And lastly, let your imagination take over. Stephen King says 60% of his story ideas come from dreams! For me, they come from watching horror flicks and Alfred Hitchcock mysteries.

And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.

Sylvia Plath

Think like a writer. Chronicle your thoughts in a story format. (I was walking through the dimly lit library, searching for the perfect book. As oppose to Oh, gee, I sure hope I can find a good book.)Use your imagination. Dream up ideas as often as you can.Practice, practice, practice. Write as often as you can. The more you write, the better you'll get.Fall in love with writing. Enjoy writing! Have fun as you write. Be in the story.Don't put yourself down. Can't think of an idea? Is your writing not flowing like you'd like it to. Don't stress out! Relax!Don't push it. If you have writer's block, don't force the ideas. My philosophy: Don't search for the ideas, let the ideas find you. The best ideas are hiding really inconspicuously, and if you search for them, you will only find lame ones.Don't get frustrated. The process of publication can be grueling. Pulling yourself through a novel is hard work. Don't give up!
