This depends upon where you are adopting an animal from. If you are getting the animal directly from a previous owner, unless there is an exchange of money or registration papers, you simply collect the animal from the previous owner and declare it yours.
If you are adopting from a shelter or rescue organization, you often have to fill out adoption paperwork and pay an adoption fee. However, the process is typically relatively painless (although I do know of some rescue groups that do unannounced home visits to make sure you have the proper resources to care for your prospective pet) and can usually be completed within a half hour.
It depends on where you adopt from.
If you go to a shelter you usually just spend a little time with the animal, give them some basic info, pay a fee, and walk out of the door!
If you go to a pet store you pick out what you want and check out and you're good to go! Unless it's a cat or dog. Then they usually get some info from you.
If you are going through a breeder you have to find one and get in contact with them, pay them, and then when they are born you can pick any that haven't already been called. If it's a pure bred then you'll have a ton of paperwork to get them registered!
There are also a lot of Facebook pages for your area where people are trying to get rid of their pets. You just find one you want and message them, go meet the animal, and if it's a fit for your family then take it home. Depending on what the page rules are you may get the animal for free or have to pay a fee.
Hope this helps!

You will find an animal you want to meet with and see if you like them. If you do then you would go into the adoption process which is paper work and tell you some more things about the animal and then you get to take the animal
Each year, thousands of people make the decision to adopt a pet. These pets have been abandoned or given up by their previous owners, and are looking for a new family to be a part of. By choosing to adopt a pet, one is making the decision to take complete responsibility for that pet’s health and well-being. Pet adoption should not be looked upon lightly, as it is a serious responsibility for a prospective adoptive pet owner.
For those interested in adopting a pet, there are many places where pets that are available for adoption can be found. A few of the most popular places are animal shelters, rescue groups, newspaper ads, and online pet adoption agencies. In most cases, an animal that is available for adoption has had a routine health check, and has received any necessary shots and vaccines. Many shelters and pet adoption facilities also spay or neuter the animals before they are ready for adoption. This is done to prevent the animals from producing additional offspring that could then be abandoned and end up in a shelter or rescue group.
In order to adopt a pet, an animal shelter or adoption facility may require the person to provide certain documentation. This can vary depending on the regulations of each specific adoption location. In some places an individual may be required to pay an adoption fee before he or she is allowed to take a new pet home. This fee is usually charged to cover the cost of providing the animal with the necessary shots and sterilization. A new trend in adoption facilities is to implant an identification device in the animal that is being adopted. This allows authorities to determine the owner of an animal if it is found out of captivity. Before allowing an individual or individuals to adopt a pet, some facilities also require proof that the animal will be provided with a suitable home.
Adopting a pet is a great alternative to buying a brand new pet. It gives the animal a new home and a fresh start in life. Adopting an animal also decreases the number of animals that must be euthanized due to a lack of homes for the animals.
Rescuing an animal from an animal shelter and giving them a warm and loving home is a wonderful thing to do. Dogs are the animal most frequently adopted from animal shelters, and their new owners are almost always happy with the new addition to their home and with the knowledge that they prevented a wonderful animal from being euthanized. If you would like to adopt a puppy from an animal shelter to enrich your life and your home, follow the steps below:
Having a puppy as part of your household is an additional responsibility and expense. You must consider the cost of food and accessories that having a puppy will cause before you adopt it. Don't wait until after you've had the puppy in your home a couple of weeks to determine that you either can't handle the responsibilities or the ongoing expenses that come with raising a dog. Do you homework ahead of time so that you know what you're getting into. If you determine that bringing a puppy into your home with enrich the lives of everyone in your family, then feel free to adopt the dog. Always keep in mind that when you adopt a pet you are saving a life.
