on a vacuum type booster there is usually a vacuum leak. either on the rubber line that runs from the booster to the engine, or a hole in the diaphragm inside the booster. the rubber line is easy and inexpensive to replace so i would check it first. if you have a hole in the diaphragm the only way to fix it is to replace the booster.

∙ 15y agoThis is one job best left to the experts. If you separate the two halves of a booster you will release a large spring which will do serious harm to yourself and or anybody standing nearby. These units can be replaced with a rebuilt or new unit. Ask your local auto parts store.

∙ 12y agoIf you step on the brake pedal and you here a hiss or the engine idle speed changes, the booster is going bad. If the booster is shot, the brake pedal will be hard with no power assist.
