The best way for a lay (non-medical) person to tell if labor starts, is to determine if one or more of the following are occurring:

* Your water has broken * You have a bloody mucousy discharge from your vagina * You are having regular, strong contractions which are getting closer together and stronger * You are developing pressure or pain in or around your vagina and anus * You are developing the feeling that you need to push If any of these are occurring, go to the hospital for evaluation for labor. And don't worry if you go for evaluation and you are wrong the staff will be quite used to it. I was a midwife for ten years and and one woman got it wrong three times with her tenth baby, nearly had the baby down the toilet in the end, and I went in myself thinking I was in labor when I wasn't.
