A bridge of some sort may be used, such as a board.

∙ 13y agoThere are several ways to transfer a patient from a wheelchair to a bed. If the patient has partial mobility, you position the wheelchair next to the bed, lock the wheels, lift the leg rests and step with a wide stance in front of the patient. Keep your body properly aligned and do not lift with your back. Place your fingers inside the gait belt that is wrapped around the patients waist. Have the patient place their arms on your shoulders and tell them on the count of 3 you are going to lift them up. Then placing your leg between your pt's knees, pivot them towards the side of the bed and sit them on the side of the bed to dangle. Then have them help you swing their legs up and onto the bed. If they are immobile, you will have to use a mechanical lift to lift and position them over the bed after you have transferred them to the side of the bed.
