Maya Angelou had a very tough childhood. In 1931, when she was about 3-4 years old, her parents (Vivian Baxter Johnson-mom and Bailey Johnson-dad) divorced. Then in 1936, she was raped by her mother's boyfriend (Mr. Freeman). Her uncle found out about this and killed Mr.Freeman immediately!
