Slavery is often thought as a unique American institution in the 1800's but it was common throughout the world. Even in Africa the taking and owning of slaves was a common occurance. However there were several differences. The African slavery system would, in many cases, allow for the eventual integration of the slaves into the mainstream culture over several generations. In America, however, the sinificant racial differences made that a very large hurdle for such incorporation into the mainstream of society - the boundaries of us and them were easily observed.
Many simplistic views of skavery reducethe relationship to "brutal slave owners whipping slaves into a bloody pulp". In reality the slaves were viewed as animals that were not human. Like animals they had to be kept reasonably healthy to provide a retrun on investment.
The real degredation came from the denial of humanity.
