Simply that cattle would be watered at the bow shaped lake, deriving into a single word of oxbow. It comes from the shape of the lake. An oxbow lake is a U-shaped lake water body formed when a wide meander from the mainstem of a river is cut off to create a lake. Check the link below :- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxbow_lake http://www.mbgnet.net/fresh/lakes/oxbow.htm ---- An oxbow lake is created when a mature river's meanders erode into eachother, on the undercut bank side. Imediatly after the meanders merge there is an island in the middle, and water flows both in the old path and in the new path. Eventually, however, the old path gets more and more stagnant as the river's water flows through the new, more direct path. Over many years, the old path becomes more of a pond than a river. this pond is called an Oxbow Lake because it resembles the shape of an oxbow, the wooden framework bent in the shape of a U that goes around the neck of an ox, used as a collor for it. Another Way An oxbow is a crescent-shaped lake lying alongside a winding river. The oxbow lake is created over time as erosion and deposits of soil change the river's course. The word oxbow comes from a man who settled in North America and found an ox and a bow togeter.

An Oxbow is a portion of the harness rigging built by slowly bending a length of green wood using heat and moisture to create a uniform "U" shaped stock that fits through holes cut into the yoke. This devise has early European origins and has been in use for at least 700 years to team up oxen for teamed pulling of carts and agricultural implements.

Another answer: Meandering bends in rivers can also form U shaped lakes, which are then known as oxbow lakes because of their similarity in shape to the U shaped stock of an ox harness

Oxbow Lake Formation

An Oxbow Lake is a development of a meander, thanks to erosion and deposition. The neck/bend of the meander grows narrower and narrower and eventually the river just takes a shortcut of straight on ahead instead of going around the neck/bend. Soon the loop of the meander is sealed off altogether and it turns into an oxbow lake.In time the lake will get covered with weeds, fill with soil and will disappear.

If you doing this for work/school I suggest you use diagrams/pictures to show each stage.

When an ox is used for pulling, it has a harness around its neck. The top part is often wooden (especially if it is a yoke to couple two oxen), and under it are metal u-shapes that go down and under the neck, called ox-bows.

The oxbow lake get their name from the U-shape that they make. The oxbow lake starts when a river bends and starts to slowly branch off. This is where the oxbow lake forms.
