Rome had an advanced sewer system. The tributary sewers emptied into the Cloaca Maxima, the great sewer, and from there waste was dumped into the Tiber.

The Romans used their famous sewer network to dispose of their rubbish, even though most houses did were connected to the system. The poor carried their rubbish in pots to throw it into access points of the sewers or went to the latrines. These were outdoors public toilets. These were benches with key-hole shaped openings cut in rows which offered little privacy. Water that had been used for the baths was used to flush the latrines.
The rooms of the poor did not have running water. The flats of the middle classes and the detached houses of the rich did have running water. Terra cotta pipes were used to carry waste water away. The Romans also sealed the pipes with concrete so that they could resist high pressure.
It also had to be noted that in pre-industrial societies, people created much less rubbish than we do now. Therefore, the Romans did not need the system of regular public rubbish collection we have now. The poor disposed of their rubbish themselves.
The Romans built sewers to deal their waste. However, the houses were not connected to the sewage system and households waste had to be taken to the sewers. Roman sewers serviced the public baths and toilets directly.
In ancient Rome a rather sophisticated sewer system was developed. The Romans had indoor Plumbing facilities as well. Much of the waste materials of the city were dumped from the sewerage system into the Tiber River.

Rubbish in Antarctica is disposed of by recycling or otherwise packing up waste and shipping it back to the country that supports the research station. Some rubbish is burned on the continent. No rubbish ends up in the Southern Ocean.
the astronauts load the rubbish into empty supply ships, send them into the atmosphere, and destroy them.

Very few people stay in Antarctica for long. Most are researchers and scientists, as such there are hefty fines for simply dropping things all over the ground so obviously it has to be put on a ship to be disposed of elsewere.
