The Great Fire of London started in a baker's shop in Pudding Lane on 2 September 1666 and burned for 5 days. It destroyed 27,000 houses, 87 churches and a cathedral. 70,000 people were left homeless but only a few people were recorded as having died in the fire. The fire put an end to the Bubonic Plaque which had infected the citizens and claimed many lives since starting the previous year. Pudding Lane still exists today although the baker's shop is obviously no longer there.

Although unproven, the theory that it started as a fire in a bakery in Pudding Lane has the widest acceptance. The London of 1666 was built mostly of timber,it was really only a matter of time to a great fire. It was a blessing in disguise in the end .London was in the grip of the great plague the year before and the fire destroyed what remained of it. At the time people were unaware that the fleas on the rats distributed the plague. London was a rat infested, disease-ridden fire trap before the fire. I believe there was little loss of life and little injury as a result of the fire,so agreat favour was done to the citizens. London was rebuilt using stone, brick, and mortar and better planning and civil engieering.
For a wonderful insight into the London of this era plus an eye witness view of the plague and the fire, the diaries of Samuel Pepys are compelling reading
In 1665, London's population was decimated by the Black Death (Bubonic Plague). The plague was spread by fleas which lived on rats. As hygiene standards were non-existent at that time, rats were everywhere and were a major health hazard -although people didn't realise it at the time. The fire of 1066, destroyed most of the houses and the rats which lived within the city, thereby eradicating the plague.
The houses of 1666 where made of mainly wood and hay which is highly flammable so the fire would just ignite and continue to burn due to the houses being so closely packed. And it stared from a fire from a backers oven.
