Organisation of the Army

The army was organised in a very simple way:

5000 Legionaries (Roman Citizens who were in the army) would form a Legion.

The Legion would be split into centuries (80 men) controlled by a Centurion.

The centuries would then be divided into smaller groups with different jobs to perform.

The army was organized in such a way that every soldier knew exactly what his position was and where he should fight in battle. They were also rank by how many years they were in the army.

Hope that answered your question.

We do not know much about Rome's first army, the Romulean army; that is, the army established by Romulus. We know that the military reform of Servius Tullius, the 6th king, introduced the hoplite phalanx of the Greeks.

Hoplites were heavy infantrymen who wore a helmet and armour and used a round shield called hoplon. The armour made the soldier slower and less agile. Therefore, soldiers needed to keep their ranks tight. The circular shape of the shield helped them to interlock. A phalanx was a deep square formation. It could be up to eight lines deep. The phalanx was replaced by the maniples of the Samnites after the Roman defeat at the Caudine Forks 321 BC during the Second Samnite War. Leter still, the maniples were replaced by the cohorts.
