Drums, in general are one of the oldest forms of musical instrument, and date back to pre-civilization periods. what one might concider to be a bass drum has been around for just as long. Usually they were hollowed out tree trunks that had animal skins stretched out over both ends. Some classical groups like the London Philharmonic still use similar instruments in their performances.
