It was on May 14, 196, that Edward Jenner from Berkely, Gloucestershire, England first atempt to create a vaccine. He extracted the contents of a pustule fro the arm of a cowpox infected milkmaid, Sarah Nelmen, and injected it into the arm of eight-year-old James Phipps. As Jenner expected, immunization or vaccination with the cowpox virus caused only mild symptoms in the boy. When he subsequently inoculated the boy with smalllpox virus, the boy showed no symtomps of disease. The procedure is repeated to many paptients. By 1800 the practice is known as variolationhad began in America and by 1805 Napoleon Bonaparte had oredered all French solders to be vaccinated.

The first vaccine was for smallpox (which is the only disease man has ever eradicated):

  1. It had been known for a long time that people that got smallpox and survived would never get it ever again
  2. From this observation, the idea of deliberately giving a person a "minor" case of smallpox in a hospital where it could be treated as soon as symptoms occurred you might prevent full-blown cases.
  3. Many experiments on that concept were tried using ground up human pustules and rubbing the powder into shallow cuts in the skin. The results were found too variable and risky.
  4. Edward Jenner observed that milkmaids never got smallpox and reasoned it must be due to exposure to something by contact with the cows they milked. Find that cows got a mild disease known as cowpox, he decided to try an experiment with ground up cow pustules.
  5. In Edward Jenner's experiment he tried using ground up cow pustules and rubbing the powder into shallow cuts in the skin. The result nobody developed any significant illness. (safety)
  6. After a period of time the people were "challenged" by taking ground up human pustules and rubbing the powder into shallow cuts in the skin. The result very few got smallpox and all subjects survived. (effectiveness)

That was the first vaccine, called that because "vacca" is latin for cow.
