The Korean war began in June, 1950 when North Korea, led by Kim Il Sung, invaded South Korea along the 38th parallel. Kim Il Sung wanted to unite Korea together but under a communist rule. Because of this, the USSR supported the invasion but were wary of becoming physically involved due to the fact that World War II had only just ended. In response, the US tried to intervene due to their fear of communism spreading throughout Asia.

In the United States, the conflict was termed a "police action," the Korean Conflict, under the aegis of the United Nations, rather than a war. This was done in part to remove the necessity of a Congressional declaration of war. However, President Truman consulted Congressional leaders and committed US combat troops on June 30, 1950, three days after the UN Security Council passed a resolution condemning the invasion of the South. (The USSR was boycotting the council meetings.)

China, which had completed its transition to a communist state in 1949, also supported North Korea, and eventually committed large numbers of its troops (the People's Volunteer Army) to the war.

The Korean War began when North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950, ostensibly because Syngman Rhee, the leader of South Korea had threatened to invade North Korea. The invasion was labeled as a pre-emptive strike. Actual fighting began in this way, although the real war was between the US and Soviet Union over control of the region.

In 1950, North Koreans suddenly attack the line 38 at midnight.

North Korea leader Kim Il-Sung used Soviet Union's tank and other weapons.

South Koreans had no way to stop their weapons because many of US soldiers went back to their country. Therefore, at first, North Korea made South Korea's territory to theirs except Busan. But, US soldier, Douglas MacArthur, succeeded to landing in Incheon so South Korea could make all of the North Korea's territory but Chinese helped North Korea so both of countries matched tightly. In 1953, North Korea(Soviet Union, China) and South Korea(US) reach a ceasefire agreement and Korean war is progressing.....

The really short answer is: North Korea invaded South Korea.

The slightly longer answer is:

After World War II, Korea was split into half- North Korea, controlled by the Soviet Union, and South Korea, controlled by the USA. North Korea wound up with a Communist Dictatorship controlled by Kim Il-Sung; South Korea wound up with a right-wing dictatorship controlled by Syngman Rhee; neither of them were particularly nice leaders. Both of them wanted to control all of Korea. All of this led to things being very tense between 1945 and 1950.

By summer 1950, American soldiers had mostly left Korea, and the Soviet Union believed that South Korea would be easily conquered. At the end of June 1950, North Korea claimed that the South attacked them, and launched a huge invasion. The North quickly overran most of the South, and the war had begun.
