How was the lunar module engineered?

Answer:
It was engineered to operate as a two -stage space vehicle usable only in non-atmospheric planets such as the moon. Therefore it did not have to be aerodynamically sound ( no wings, fins, etc) There was an ascent and a descent stage. Craft was expendable, the descent stage formed the launch-pad for the ascent stage. obviously solid-rocket propellants were used. an interesting sidelight is the operating controls were somewhat akin to those of either Cranes or Helicopters- and astros who operated the Moon Buggy or LEM ( Lunar Excursion Module) did receive some background instruction on Helicopter piloting from Uncle Sam.
