Niger Delta is simply the Delta part of River Niger that traverses Nigeria from upstream north to downstream south. It is presently made up of nine states for regional development purposes. The states are Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Balyesa, Cross-River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, Rivers . The capital is Balyesa state. The Ministry of Niger Delta was created to facilitate the input of Federal Government development intents in the area. There is also the Niger Delta Development Cooperation (NDDC). The area has the second largest mangrove forest in the world, second largest wetland in the world, and million years of sediments from river Niger made it the 6 largest oil producing region in the world or largest in Africa. It has about 26% of Nigerian population and occupies 8% of Nigerian land mass.
