Some of the priests working in the diocese of Archbishop Romero were involved in the Liberation Theology movement and were close friends of his. While Romero did not openly support the movement he sympathized with it, especially when some of his close friends were murdered by right wing death squads. Pope John Paul considered him to be part of the Liberation movement, if not directly, indirectly for not publicly rebuking its members.
