The Mojave people lived along the banks of the Colorado River. These farmers had two types of housing:
The Comanche people were once part of the Shoshone tribe of Wyoming, but separated and moved to the Southern Plains of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The men were nomadic hunters and warriors and always on the move, so the housing had to be easy to assemble and take down; therefore, they lived in teepees. It was constructed of tanned buffalo hide stretched over 16-18 lodge poles. Simple and yet very effective shelter.
The Shasta people lived in northwest California and southwest Oregon. Their primary food was salmon, as well as berries, bulbs, nuts and deer. The dwelling house of the winter village was called the "umma". It was about 16 x 20 feet and dug 3 feet into the ground. The upper portion was dirt/sod side walls and the end walls were made of wood. The wooden roof was steeply pitched. There was a central fire pit. In the summer, they would travel to find the best food and use teepees or lean-tos.
Actually, there is evidence that the Mojaves were quite advanced for their era. In fact, they built two types of houses-- one for the hot summer months, and another for the cold winter months. They even built their summer homes on stilts so that if the rivers flooded (they needed to live near a river so they could catch fish), their home would be safe. Typical Mojave summer dwellings were thatched huts, covered with grass. Typical winter homes were not near a river, and were sturdier-- with clay walls to keep in the heat.
