The original inhabitants of Sicily were over-run by the Indo-European Sicels, who were not Phoenician. Sicily was colonised by the surplus population of mainland G…reece, who were shipped there to relieve the problems they were creating in their home cities. These Greek cities were established around the fertile coast of the island, and the Sicels were pushed into the mountainous interior. The Phoenician influence came from Carthage (Carthaginians originated from Phoenicia) which tried to take over Sicily, but was repelled by the Greeks and Rome which entered the scene against Carthage and took over. The population was further diluted over the centuries by slaves introduced by the Romans, by Vandals, Goths, and later in succession Arabs, Normans, Germans, French, Spanish etc - you name it.
