In the 1920's Japan sent the Us Cherry Blossom trees as a 'gift'. But in real truth they only did it because they wanted to trick the US.

One must track FDR's decisions that, one by one, hem in Japan in a way for which the result is obvious to any thinking person: FDR GOADED Japan into war against the USA, with no choice. After all, if YOU are an island country, what will YOU do if your oil and iron are cut off? FDR had to know this.

In 1940 and 1941, under FDR's highly controversial baiting decisions (even at that time), the relationship steadily deteriorated, as everybody -- even FDR himself! -- would logically expect.

After the Pearl harbor attack, Japan and the USA's relationship worsened and the US entered WW2, with their allies Brittan.

Interesting fact: President Roosevelt called December 8th "A date which will live in infamy."

Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. had basically cut a good amount of the trading with japan, including steel and oil shipments, in order to hopefully stop Japan from expanding. Diplomats negotiated, and the U.S. and Japan had tried to avoid conflict. However, the U.S. had cracked a code and found that Japan was going to attack them from the Pacific, which erupted in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Japan used to be a closed country and would only allow trade with China and the Dutch. They viewed Americans as barbarians.

The U.S. had natural interests in the Pacific. They wanted to use Japan as a place to resupply on their way to China.

To open Japan the U.S. used Blackship Diplomacy. Naval leader Matthew C. Perry traveled to Japan by way of the traditional Atlantic route with 4 American Gunships and a letter from the President. Japan recognized force and Japan was opened. 2 ports would be open for American whalers and have 2 "embassies" or places to stay. This was referred to the Treaty of Peace and Amnesty.

In 1858 Townsend Harris came to Japan to negotiate trade. The Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed and other countries like Britain and Russia could trade with Japan now.

The western impact caused a collapse of the Japanese government.

Relations between Japan and the United States turned increasingly negative after the Manchurian/Mukden Incident and the Japanese military seizure of much of China in 1937-39 following that. American outrage focused on the Japanese attack on the US gunboat Panay in Chinese waters in late 1937 ( for which Japan apologized), and the atrocities of the Nanking Massacre at the same time. The United States had a powerful navy in the Pacific, and it was working closely with the British and the Dutch governments. When Japan seized Indochina (now Vietnam) in 1940-41, the United States, along with Australia, Britain and the Dutch government in exile, boycotted Japan via a trade embargo. They cut off 90% of Japan's oil supply, and Japan had to either withdraw from China or go to war with the US and Britain as well as China to get the oil.

Part of the tensions were due to that fact that the US and other Allies in WW1, ignored Japan. Japan fought on the Allied side in WW1.The county was very sensitive to any slights and they were upset that they really were not included in the Treaty with Germany at the end of WW2.

How is the relationship between the US and Japan?

Currently the US and Japan enjoy a very friendly relationship. The hostilities of WW II are long over and forgiven. Actually, the relationship is awful, if you want to find out why, watch the movie The Cove, it will tell you everything and a little more of what you need to know. "The Cove" is not about the US Japanese relationship, it's about the Japanese fishing industry. You may disapprove of the friendly relationship between the US and Japan, but it is nonetheless a friendly relationship. The US and Japan have both been involved in unethical business practices and in poisoning the planet, but they have been doing it in a state of mutual friendship.

Why does the US have a strong relationship with Japan but not with Canada or Mexico?

It depends on what you mean by 'strong relationship'. You mean in economic, military or diplomatic terms? In diplomatic terms, the US has a much closer relationship with Canada than either Japan or Mexico. This is mostly due to past aggression wars between the US and Japan (World War 2) and the US and Mexico (Mexican-American War of 1846-1848). In economic terms, the US also has a closer relationship to Canada, as both countries are almost integrated as one single entity -- for example, fewer import/export taxes, easyness to cross each others borders. The US has however, a larger amount of foreign direct investment from Japan, but that is just an economic measure on how much foreign debt the US owes to Japan. In military terms, the US has provided a 'nuclear umbrella' for Japan. Again, this is not due to a 'good neighbor' policy, but because after WW2, Japan had to be demilitarized. To contain the Soviet Union during the Cold War, the US invested heavily on naval bases and modern weaponry in Japan.
