The answer would have to be for the contiguous US, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. (Alaska is 1480 miles long and 810 miles wide, including the Aleutians.)

For the "lower 48," either the north-south direction or the east-west distance can be considered "width".

In the east-west direction, the contiguous US is about 2800 miles from California, Oregon, or Washington to Maine or Florida. The north-south distance is about 1600 miles at its widest (North Dakota to Brownsville, TX), about the same length as the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida.

The minimum east-west width, from San Diego, CA to Savannah GA, is only about 2150 miles.
