You do not have to have the ability to see to learn about, to be aware of and to know that prejudice exists. A blind person can read and listen and learn about culture from many sources. Blind people are like any other sub-set of people. Some are more educated, informed and aware of social problems than others. Often a blind person has a more acute sense of hearing and they hear things many sighted people may not even notice. You do not have to be able to see to hear someone being treated with racial prejudice.

We all know that a person's racial background may be evident in the tone of their voice, their accent, the way they use words, and other cues. A blind person who is shopping at a mall or waiting in a doctor's office may very well overhear a person of color ask a question or ask for help and receive a rude or unhelpful or unfriendly reply. It is not difficult to notice racial prejudice and discrimination in some situations.

Why does discrimination occur?

Discrimination occurs because people want to think they are important, so they want to think others are less important. It also occurs through ignorance, and people being raised be racist parents. What is discrimination? In simple terms, it's unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice. Most types of discrimination stem from stereotypes. All blonde's are dumb. All redheaded people have a fiery temper. It goes on. Some times it can be subtle; sometimes it can be glaringly blatant. Discrimination signifies that a person or group of people feel that they are superior to another. When most people mention discrimination, they think of black people. Why does it happen? Discrimination occurs for many reasons. Some people discriminate simply because that is how they were raised. Others do it because they have a problem accepting anyone who isn't like themselves. But mostly, they all do it simply because they are ignorant.

What groups in society may express their cultures without facing prejudice or hostility?

Probably no group can get a totally free pass. Even if a group's view represents the view of the vast majority of the society, the minority could still be hostile. That would be the ideal. In reality, all groups are disliked by at least someone, and do face some degree of prejudice or hostility. Some groups are much more unpopular than others, of course.
