The majority of students are still considered dependents by their parents. That does not affect your chances of getting financial help. The income and expenses of your family will play a factor on whether you qualify for loans, grants or scholarships. And of course your academic history and other factors could apply depending on the type of assistance.

Untrue! It matters incredibly if your parents wont offer to pay for your education. If you are considered a dependedent student, and your parents make gobs of money, the Fed, and most schools will use your PARENTS income to figure the EFC (which means if they make a lot of money, they are expected to contribute a lot) and Financial Aid and Federal Loans amounts are figured by Subtracting the EFC from the cost of attendance. The remaining number is all you can borrow! Regardless how good your credit is. Also, your parents income will affect wheather or not you are eligible for grants, or need based loans. It's a pathetic situation that we have been forced through. Students like us are forced to borrow high interest alternative loans, through banks, and have to scour around for cosigners, considering most students don't have outstanding, if any credit.

Responder #2 you have it wrong. Let me explain. The EFC is subtracted from the cost of education (CE) ONLY to determine how much NEED-BASED loan money you can borrow.

All dependent freshmen are offered $2625, sophomores $3500, JR/SR's can borrow up to $5500. But, depending on the EFC, none, some, or all of the loan may be unsubsidized. This means the gov't isn't making interest payments for you while you're in school.

If you have a high EFC you may get all unsubsidized loan, but you'll still be offered the same AMOUNT as all other students in your grade level.

What's wrong with doing what lots of students do -- get a job and make your own way? It may take a little longer, but think of the satisfaction and pride you'll feel knowing what you accomplished on your own.

Maybe by showing your parents that you are serious about getting an education, they'll decide to help you out. If they can't afford to help don't blame them, just take pride in working to pay for your schooling. And make sure ''you'' are in a position to help your own kids some day.

If your parents can afford to help, but still won't even after you get a job, go ahead and work your way through school in spite of them. But I'd never let them take credit for ''my'' accomplishment if it were me.

Obviously you have no idea how hard it is to work full time and go to school part time.. And not to mention its going to take not twice as long but usually three times as long to get your degree.. I have to work full time because I don't have any dependents. Im not married, Im not in the military and Im not a ward of the state. I am 20 years old going to college living 3 states away from my parents have been for 3 years and Im still considered a dependent . Not only that but I filled the FASFA and everything i needed to to get financial aid and because my mother and father had never filled taxes before they have taken over 3 months to even think about approving me.. I ended up having to pay tuition out of my pocket . If you think that it makes you feel more accomplished... It doesnt.. Everyone else is getting the free money why shouldn't someone who parents will not even help them? In my mind I would think that would be the first person that needs the assistance.
