Square root signs are typically not included in most fonts on the computer.

The above is correct, but you can make a square root sign with any keyboard using ASCII code "alt 251", like this √ - simply hold the alt key and type in 251 and a √ will appear when you release the alt key. You can make hundreds of different symbols this way, just search ASCII codes. ♂♀♪♫ etc.....

I don't know of any Alt code, but you could copy it from the character map. On Vista and Windows 7 you can just type Character Map in the Start Menu search. For older operating systems, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map. The square root sign is near the bottom of the list. You can find it quickly by making sure "Advanced View" is checked and by typing "square root" in the search box.

If using Office software, type 221A followed by Alt-X

On a PC, if you hold down the ALT key while typing 251 you get √, which is supposed to look like a square root symbol.

or, you can just Google "square root sign" and copy and paste it.

√ was easy enough.

Hold the "Alt" key, then press 2 5 1 on your numpad and release Alt.

*Note, numbers on the numpad and the numbers above the letters of the keyboard are not the same, if you are on a laptop without a numpad press and hold the "Fn" and "Alt" key and then press K I J instead of 2 5 1
