I have MS Windows XP Professional running on my PC with a 40 GB HDD. I wish to install a LINUX OS. Please let me know which to install- DREAM LINUX or UBUNTU or FEDORA 6?In: Linux |
Answer
I agree, PCLinuxOS is the simplest to use. Now about distros: it is difficult if not impossible to absolutely answer a question of which one is the best because they are all similar in the basic operation. It would be like asking 'What is better, oranges from California or Florida?" It all boils down to personal preference.
I would recommend PCLinuxOS for absolute newbies because it is the simplest and works the best right out of the box. The next best for a newbie is Ubuntu, but requires more setup and knowledge of Linux to be productive. I've been using Linux for the past 5 years. I'm constantly testing new versions as they come out. You can research TONS of different Linux distributions at http://www.distrowatch.com I hope this helps.
Answer
I switched from Windows to Linux I have tried a few different releases and distros My personal fav is Ubuntu I've been using it for almost 2 years and it is my full time PC.
Answer above is correct in saying you need some Linux Knowledge to install software because you use command line installs routinely it is not hard to learn I knew nothing really about Linux the Ubuntu forums and Wiki provided me with what I needed to know.
if you go with ubuntu just remember this... it is the most common thing you will type (sudo apt-get install) and ( cp ) the copy command and don't forget to type ( sudo bash ) to get to root.
Answer
I've been using openSUSE,it comes with TONS of software, so many open source software included, COMES AS DVD, easy to use, easily customizeable, even comes with WINE! Easy setup. Connect to internet easily. TO install extra software from repository, go to YaST and it will be easy from there. Does need only windows knoledge. I suggest OpenSuSE.
