I have a 2000 VW beetle The anti theft alarm does not disable when I unlock the door. How do I disable the alarm system.?

I had the same problem - and thanks to the internet found the solution... Open the front door and the hatchback. Now insert the key into the ignition and start the car. Voila! The alarm is disabled! If this doesn't sound like control-alt-delete, I don't know what does! Now I'm searching to find out how to turn it back on - because, while this stopped the alarm from going off, it also deactivated the keyless entry.
