I guess he's saying his daughter is his priority. This does not mean he doesn't love you, however he is going to expect that if you love him, you will honor his wishes or concerns regarding his daughter and how she fits into his life and yours. I would also imagine, he will expect you to treat his daughter as if she were your own. Still, this is a guessing game we are going through. The best way to gain clarity, is to sit down with him (in a non-threatening way), and discuss this with him through open, honest, and direct communication.

It's out of "loyalty" to his daughter that he makes this plea to you. Quite obviously, you may have put him into a predicament where he was given only two options ... Having been a single parent myself, I was also thrown into that fire pit, and I chose my Son, and still would to this day. If a potential "mate" cannot accept the other's offspring as being equally or more important, then it's time to move on.
