First, make sure you have access to the user manual on the Canon Powershot G9; I'd start at the Canon web site and go from there. Then make a plan to try every feature out, even if you can't see any immediate use for it.

In the digital world, the photographic basics are point and shoot. Do that - a lot - then review your results and pick out the shots you like. Then try to figure out why you like them and repeat those techniques. If you need some guidance, look for photographic displays on the internet (National Geographic, travel sites, etc.) and pick out some features you like (vibrant color, frozen action, emotional faces...) Then make yourself a picture opportunity which captures what you like, and take a lot of pictures of that scene, adjusting your camera as you go; make extreme changes so you can see the effect of the change. Take notes.

For more photographic basics, I'd be inclined to go to About.com and look for a Photography interest group. The computer graphics interest group is quite active, and might lead you into some picture taking blogs. That group will certainly be important to you as you step into the major difference between film photography and digital photography.

Processing after the picture was taken used to be a necessary evil (except for the greats like Ansel Adams, etc.) In today's digital world, the after-the-shot work can be as creative as the way in which you initially point and shoot. Make sure you get some instruction in that area, too. And About.com (computer graphics) has a large number of tutorials in that area.

My general recommendations:

* Always carry your camera with you. * If in doubt about taking a picture or waiting a few seconds for a better shot, take the picture. Then take it again... and again... and again * Find out how to take burst photographs (3 or more with one shutter press); this is particularly important for group photographs. Replacing an eyes closed face with a smiling one is a piece of cake digitally, and makes everyone happy.

Is photography a resource?

The answer depends on the context of the question. Photography is a craft; it can be an art; collections of photographs can be considered resources when they serve to fill a potential need; a photography department might be considered a resource, etc. Probably to get a good answer, you'll need to refine the context of your question.
