I own a 1982 Yamaha IT 175J and it has good spark and is getting gas to the jug but when it fires it isnt more than a pop or two any ideas on how to make it run?

I would try a new spark plug and new gas. Make sure the 2 stroke oil mixture is correct. If it still won't start,worst case, You may need a new piston and ring and maybe a bore. A new top end rebuild is not that expensive.
