Perhaps the timing wasn't causing the backfire problem, and the engine needs more timing. Look for other causes for backfiring such as leaking vacuum lines, and put the timing back to factory specs to get the power back. Definitely focus on the timing as suggested above. If you're at high altitude you can add a couple degrees of advance. Remember to follow the manufacturers recommendation when setting the timing, that usually includes temporarily disconnecting (and plugging) the vacuum advance on the distributor. Also, check the catalytic converter, if it has become plugged from sitting, you might have an exhaust backpressure problem.
