If God is omnipotent can He create something so heavy even He couldn't pick it up or can God create Himself? |
Opinions on the 'Omnipotence Paradox'
- Matt. 19:26 Jesus said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
- God has unlimited power. That simply is the answer! When we refer to unlimited anything, it would be beyond our brain limits to understand, that's just how we were created! Limited! For example, who can think about infinity as a number...try and think about it, you're gonna blank out. Limited! So instead of trying to understand God's (The Creator) power or anything else regarding God , try to finish understanding his creations! There are many things that are not understood by humans. Let me demonstrate: Does the whole universe have a limit(boundaries)? Or is it unlimited? If limited, then what is after its end? If unlimited, where to? And many other things, even human, like what is your soul? In general, understand the Creator's creations before attempting to understand the Creator Himself.
- Engage in debate and ask questions. If God made our brains capable of questioning him, who is to deny this right?
- This is often an argument used by inexperienced atheists to assert that God really is not omnipotent: J.L. Cowan attempts to resolve the paradox in "The Paradox of Omnipotence Revisited." He proposes the following:(1) Either God can create a stone which He cannot lift, or He cannot create a stone which He cannot lift.(2) If God can create a stone which He cannot lift, then He is not omnipotent (since He cannot lift the stone in question).(3) If God cannot create a stone which He cannot lift, then He is not omnipotent (since He cannot create the stone in question).(4) Therefore God is not omnipotent. However, the question itself is thought by many to be essentially nonsensical - an illogical concept, like a square circle. C.S. Lewis took this stance, and asserted that therefore, there is only a perceived paradox, and God may once again be thought of as omnipotent.
- The Bible says that there are only two things that God cannot do. One is, he cannot lie (Numbers 23:19). The other is he cannot die (Rev 15:3). Since he is a spirit person, living in the spirit realms, there would not be any point with regard to making a rock that he cannot pick up. The biggest rock that we humans have direct contact with is the Earth itself. The Bible writer Isaiah, however, wrote 2700 years ago about the "sphere(or circle) of the Earth."(Isaiah 40:22) 3500 years ago, Job spoke of the Earth as "hanging upon nothing(Job 26:7)," that is, having no visible means of support.
- This is often referred to as the '''omnipotence paradox.''' Others consider this a logical fallacy.
- No, because if he made that bolder and decided He wanted to lift it then he would lift it.
- Like Mr. Lewis said, it is really a paradox, a paradox that was aimed toward inexperienced Christians to make everyone doubt God, as Satan did and still does. All in all, you should not want to be grouped with Satan, as he was the first to doubt God, as that is what he did when he asked Eve, "Yea, hath God said", as both Eve and Satan knew what God told them concerning the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil, but Satan exaggerated it and caused Eve to add to what God said, which led to the fall, though Adam (a representative of all of us) takes most of the blame, as he was the man, and should have stopped it there and then. However, it all comes down to this. God the Father is the creator of all life, and the Sustainer of it as well. Anything within God's master plan can and will be done by God, but creating nor lifting too heavy boulders is not part of His will, as He cares too much for man and trying to bring all to Him to be saved, to be concerned with pleasing anyone who is still playing the role of a Pharasee, as Christ was too concerned with the multitudes and His disciples to be bogged down with the Pharasees and the Sadducees.
- If he is God, he could make and do anything. How could you create the world but have a problem picking up a rock or anything else for that matter.
- The way it's phrased makes 2 ridiculous assumptions: 1. an absence of ability should be considered an ability2. there's something greater than infinity. The statement that God is almighty applies to only perfections, not imperfections for an imperfection is a privation of power, not the possession of it. Since God has no weaknesses or imperfections, He is unable by His very nature to create a piece of matter that He cannot master or manipulate according to His Will.
- Without the force of gravity involved I think I could lift the rock for God.
- This question cannot be answered by a human mind. We cannot grasp this concept because it is above our thinking. I'd say only God knows
