If a hamster dies is it normal for another hamster to eat the corpse even though normal food is available? |
[Edit] |
Answer
It's actually very normal for hamsters and other rodents to do that. They dont know any better about cannibalism and, by eating a dead memember, it's receiving a lot of protein.
Answer
Yes, hamsters are omnivorous and therefore it would be natural for them to eat the corpse of another hamster. However this should not be encouraged - remove the body as soon as possible, for if the other animal died of a disease the surviving hamster could catch it through eating its corpse. Provide your hamster with (very small) amounts of cooked chicken breast on occasion to supplement the desire for animal protein.
Answer
Hamsters SHOULD NEVER BE HOUSED TOGETHER. THEY WILL FIGHT TO THE DEATH BECAUSE THEY ARE SOLITARY ANIMALS. IT WAS THE OTHER HAMSTER THAT PROBABLY KILLED IT. REMOVE THE BODY. IT IS NORMAL FOR THEM TO KILL, BUT DO NOT EVER LET THEM EAT THE BODY.
Answer
The above is true for many breeds of hamster, but not all. There are certain breeds ofmsters that can be housed together peacefully as long as they are of the opposite sex or are from the same litter. After all, if no hamsters could ever come into contact without killing each other, then where do baby hamsters come from?
