generally the holes on the back of the switch are more convienient to use, but there are two types of holes. one type is for solid copper wire only and it will be stated on the switch. the solid wire is inserted into the hole and cannot be easily pulled out because of an internal clamping mechanism. the other allows either stranded or solid wire to be inserted into the hole, and then a screw on the side of the switch is tightened down to secure the wire in place. terminals can be used anytime, just be certain to wind the wire clockwise around the terminal so that the wire doesnt "back out" as you tighten the terminal screw. in either case be certain to strip off only the correct amount of insulation.

What is a screw tap?

A self-tapping screw can be used to join two pieces of plastic or metal with simple holes drilled into them. A "normal" screw requires one of the holes to be "tapped" - a spiral has to be cut into one of the holes to accept the screw. Tapping holes is something of a game of skill; the tapping tools use very hard, brittle steel and it's easy to break a tool in the hole.

What is the single pole and double throw switch?

A single pole switch is the ordinary switch that is used to turn the lights off and on in your home. A double throw switch is also known as a 3-way switch in North America. A double throw switch has a single pole connected to a common screw or terminal, often black. There are 2 additional screws or terminals, often brass colored. In one switch position this pole is connected to one of these screws or terminals and in the other position it connects to the other screw or terminal. If you think of a baseball diamond as an example for this switch, in one position the base line from home to first is hot. In the other position the base line from home to third is hot.
