If an entire house is infested with mold can it be treated and if so would the treatments have to continue on a regular basis?

Answer:

Treating Mold

If your whole house is infested with mold it would be good to find out what kind of mold it is. If it is black mold this can cause a lot of different health problems. It can effect your memory as well as respiratory problems. It would be best to have a professional in disaster restoration to come in to assess the mold. The way to permanently get rid of the mold is to remove and replace all the gyproc effected. It could possible end up needing the ceiling and floors removed and replaced also.
Please have your house inspected as black mold can cause irreversible effects to you and your family's health. If you find that you feel ill most of the time and feel better if you have been away from your house for a holiday (even 2 or 3 days can make a difference) and then you feel tired and sick after you are in the house again, this could be an indicator towards black mold. Frequent headaches can also be an indicator of mold in your house.
More input from FAQ Farmers:
  • "You can mix a gallon of bleach with a gallon of water and spray it on with a hand-held 3-gallon sprayer bottle available at Wal-Mart. Wear a mask and safety glasses. I did a basement ceiling years ago and the mold didn't come back."
  • I can't find the "click here to answer" GUI on my page, which is frustrating because it forces me to modify worthy responses that need no modification, but I want to add my own knowledge in the form of an answer. Anyhow, mold requires the same basic necessities of life humans do. The best thing to do is to deny it moisture. Correct all plumbing, roofing, siding and window leaks and ensure proper drainage and ventilation at the foundation.

  • Do NOT mix 1 gal bleach with 1 gal water. First, it is unnecessary, a 10% bleach solution would be enough. Second, that much bleach could cause respiratory irritation, burning eyes, etc. Additionally, not all "black mold" is harmful (there are many different species), and health effects related to mold are highly controversial. The first step here is determining what the water source is. Mold needs moisture to survive, without the water, it will die. Correct the moisture problem first. Remove contaminated materials from the house and clean it, and you will not have a mold problem anymore.
  • Once you have the mold removed by whatever means are found suitable and all repairs made to plumbing and other water sources there are preventative measures that should be observed to keep it from returning.
First: Always use the ventilation fan when showering and NEVER keep the restroom door closed completely when not in use: humidity builds in a closed environment with standing water, ie. the toilet(!) and promotes an environment for biological growths. (Note: Some mildews have roots that simple topological applications of tergicides will not remove and using paint sealers to cover them is a losing proposition since they can eat the latex (natural rubber) and removal and replacement of the affected gypsum board and even structural elements may be required!)
Second: Proper ventilation is also needed to keep interior humidity low throughout the home. Ensure that the roof is adequately vented via soffit vents and can or peak vents. These are easily installed and do not require reroofing of the home.
