You should be able to open an Excel document in Word. I've done that before with no problems at all.

Presuming you don't have Word (since you don't have Excel, and they usually come bundled together in Microsoft Office), you can open Excel files in Apple's Numbers (part of iWork '08), or in NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org.
