It's too heavy.

And even if they were to manufacture it, the impact of the crash would kill everyone anyway. so wouldn't be of much use.

Also, whoever gave this answer clearly hadn't read the categorization.

The flight recorder (black box) is made mostly out of Titanium. If one built an airplane out of Titanium it would be too expensive and would never be able to get off the ground.

AnswerThe SR-71 was made mostly out of Titanium (very high strength to weight ratio) and it got off the ground fine. It was also a two-seat airplane that cost $33 million in 1960s dollars, so no one would ever be able to afford an airliner made out of it.

Answer

I don't know if it is true that black box is made of Titanium, or if the SR-71 was made (partially at least) from Titanium. But I know that black box is VERY compact, meaning it is very rigid and heavy relatively to its size. On the other hand SR-71, even if it is made of Titanium, could be easily destroyed if it had crashed to the ground. And the reason is because it is not so compact, it is not so rigid. It is an airplane and it should be light relatively to its size.

So the answer is, that material is not the ONLY reason why the black box is not damaged. It is the way that black box is constructed, compact and rigid. That makes it heavy relatively to its size. And that is why, this design can not be applied to the airplanes.

Answer

Sometimes the 'black box' is not even found, much less completely protected during a crash. The data recorder is designed to withstand certain abuse that even if the aircraft could survive it, the human bodies inside could not.

As for the use of titanium, it is a very misunderstood material. It is not as strong as steel, and certainly isn't 'indestructible'. Titanium's advantage is a relatively high strength-to-weight ratio, which is why it is used for aerospace applications, where a combination of light weight and high strength are important.

The SR-71 was made with titanium skin to withstand the heat created by air friction at Mach-3+.

It is made of three layers. A harded steel or titanium covering, with insulation underneath to protect against high impact crashes. Underneath that is fireproofing, a special material that allows the box to withstand hours at high temperatures.

If the black box flight recorder is never damaged during a plane crash why dont they just make the plane out of that?

This is an old joke...but one of the biggest reasons the flight recorders, which are orange rather than black, don't get damaged during crashes is they're embedded pretty deeply within the plane.

Is flight data recorder fire proof?

Nothing is waterproof, especially considering the high stresses involved in an airplane accident. The flight data recorder is water resistant. It is also designed to minimize the probability of data loss even if it does get wet internally.

What is the colour of a flight recorder?

They're bright orange. This is so they're easy to find in the event the airplane they're installed in is involved in an incident where the flight recorder must be analyzed. This doesn't necessarily mean a crash--they pull cockpit voice recorders and listen to them if the plane does something really questionable-looking,
