If the cold doesn't cause a cold then what really causes a cold?

Answer:
Viruses cause the common cold, usually the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold.

The reason the common cold is more prevalent in cold weather is because more people spend more time indoors with other people who may be infected with the virus and it is easily spread when people are closer together. There is some indication that another contributing factor is that people don't get out in the sun as much in cold weather and that may cause Vitamin D deficiency that can weaken the immune system. Also, being in the heated homes in cold weather means people are breathing dryer air and this can allow mucus tissue to dry out making viruses more easily introduced to the respiratory system.
