The male and female chromosome combined during reproduction in fallopian tube of female after the fusion of male and female germ cell, when this germ cell strat dividing then at the miotic prophase the chromosome undergo crossing over and the two chromosome exchange their genetic data and the resulting cell have qualities or genetic material of both the parents. This process is important and essential for continuity of life. The short answer is that the number is doubled. Let's look at humans for an example. Somatic (or normal) human cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes, or 46 individual chromosomes. Human sex cells, however, only have one copy of each chromosome, and therefore have only 23 chromosomes. When a male sex cell and a female sex cell join, the resulting cell (the zygote) will contain all of the chromosomes present in the two joining sex cells. Therefore, the resulting cell will be a somatic cell, with 23 pairs of chromosomes, or 46 individual chromosomes.

If a y chromosome and x chromosome meet in the womb (through fertilization of an egg), a male child will begin to develop. The female (egg cell) normally has only an X gender chromosome, while the sex chromosome of the male (sperm cell) may be X or Y.
