The moon is gravitationally bound to the earth.

If the sun weren't there to illuminate it, the moon would continue to accompany the earth

wherever we went, but we couldn't see it.

If the sun had just suddenly disappeared, than the moon would still be there, though we would not be able to see it, as the light would not reflect from it
