If you're a thin runner trying to gain weight what should you do?

Answer:
  • Are you trying to gain muscle or fat? Do weights and you'll gain muscle. Eat more and you'll get fatter. Run less and you'll get fatter. I'm guessing, however, that you've always been both thin and a good runner. If this is correct, it's because you'd have a lot of slow-twitch muscles fibres compared to fast-twitch muscle fibres.

  • Basically, talk to your parents and see if you can get an appointment with a dietician and they will give you a diet and exercise plan that is best for your body type. It is the best thing to do for your body. You will look and feel how you want to feel. Also, if you try it yourself you might not turn out how you wanted to. I recommend a dietician.

  • Well, boost up your calories by a couple hundred. Try mixing some protein powder into a shake/smoothie and drink one every couple of days. Do more weight lifting or just plain exercising not aerobics as it makes it harder to gain weight. If you don't want this new weight to be...'jiggly'...stay away from making those extra calories be fatty, junk foods, and stay more with protein and stuff like that. Have fun!

  • Distance runners both excel at their sport and are thin for the same reasons: they have lots more slow-twitch fibres. These fibres don't grow larger the same way fast-twitch fibres do. So for you to gain muscle, you'll have to work harder for longer to see any changes occur. Running will tend to negate a lot of muscle gain, so consider reducing your running if you're totally devoted to this idea.
