When you die, your heart ceases to beat, your brain stops functioning, and eventually your body will decay. This happens to all people, regardless of belief.

You, in words, will cease to exist. It is impossible for anyone to grasp this concept entirely because the 'experience' itself is an entire lack of experience. The concept of nonexistence can be compared to the lack of existence of a human before being conceived or brought into the world - The universe was here before you were born and will continue when you are gone.

It cannot be ruled out, that when approaching death, you may experience "dreams" your own conscience has created. So before death, it is indeed possible to enter a sort of heaven, and that being your final experience, may set a certain mood or feeling before your total annihilation of 'being'; which will come without preexisting knowledge.

Whatever personal belief you hold will dictate what you think will happen to yourself or others - but what we do know to be fact is that we do not know what happens after death. We may think we know (in the form of theories, practices, beliefs, etc) but we do not really know, since you are alive, and whatever you believe will happen, might only happen after your death. (So, hence, you do not know what will happen until you die.)This doesn't mean you shouldn't believe in your faith, or necessarily that your faith is wrong; it only means that we, as flawed beings, cannot be certain as to what awaits us after death.

As Atheism does not have a set of beliefs aside from the knowledge that there is no god or gods, they can pretty much believe whatever they want about the period folloing death. Some opinions:

  • Atheists believe that when you die, your conscious and unconscious mind simply cease to exist. There are no thoughts, no memories, no nothing.
  • People believe different things, some atheists believe it just ends, some believe you go into an eternal dream state. I'm an atheist and I believe in reincarnation.
  • They accept the reality that there is no supernatural deity taking care of everything. Look around. The world is a disaster. They do not need the comfort of a mythology to give this life meaning by promising a wonderful afterlife. A person who knows this life is the one life may be more likely to make the most of this life and more importantly, takes responsibility for their own life.
  • They believe that there is no God or place for their spirits to go to after their mortal body fades, nor do they believe in spirits either usually.

I too believe that when you die you rot.

An atheist usually does not believe in heaven or hell. i, for instance believe that when I die i am simply dead. I get buried in the ground and don't "go" anywhere.

An atheist just believes that nothing happens you just die there is nothing else. You go into the ground and feed the next cycle of life (mostly worms and grasss). That is why an atheist thinks that life is extra precious because you only get one short go at it.

The same thing that happens to everyone else. Consciousness ceases, cellular action decreases to an end, and the body begins to decompose.

ANSWER:

Regardless of your belief of what happens after you die, the same thing happens to everyone- you can't change reality simply by really believing and wanting it to be otherwise. If the Christians are right (which I believe) you go to either heaven or hell. If the Buddhists are right, you are reincarnated, if atheists are right you simply cease to exist, and so on.

The same thing that happens to anyone else who dies. They simply cease living. There is no heaven or hell. People do not get reincarnated. These are all imaginary concepts developed for superstitious people.

When you die, you simply . . . stop living.

While there is no unified atheist position on this (there being no other defining trait of atheism than that there is no deity) most feel that after death there is nothing. The Universe existed for some 14 or 15 billion years without you and will continue to exist without you after you have been here for 100 years or so.

Physically your body goes from biochemistry to chemistry, decomposes and rejoins the water, nitrogen and carbon cycles.

Most Atheists will be honest and say they just don't know, since there is no verifiable testable evidence of someone who died and came back to accurately report what goes on. An Atheist will usually proclaim, when they die, they're dead, no afterlife or reincarnation. So, make your one life a good one.

According to Atheistic beliefs (or the lack thereof) the body is simply a physical construct made up of it's individual parts. At the end of an individual's life their body decays and eventually decomposes entirely.
