If you ask the police to find out if the gun is stolen and it is can you get in trouble if you just bought it? |

Answer
Maybe.... It would depend on where you bought it and what your knowledge was of the firearm when you bought it. If you bought it from a legit dealer then it is unlikely stolen.....most dealers know better and will avoid anything that seems questionable. It probably depends on the state you live in. In New Hampshire the potential charge would be receiving stolen property in which the police would need to prove that "you knew or should have known" the item was stolen or likely stolen. Kind of vague I know, but it's meant to put the burden on the buyer to use common sense. If it turns out to be stolen and you did not get in trouble the police would still sieze the weapon as recovered stolen property.
Answer
If you just bought it and ask the police to check it and then it turns out to be stolen, in all liklihood you'd be in no trouble at all; you're just trying to verify the gun is clean. If it does turn out to be stolen, however, the police have to confiscate the gun, so you'd be out whatever you paid for it unless you filed a civil suit against the seller.
