Easy answer: can you plug a toaster into this outlet? If you CAN, it is only for a 120 volts and not suitable to supply power to your 240 volts stove.

Since you needed to ask this question here, the best thing you can do is to ask a licenced electrician for his advice. If necessary he will be able to install the correct new circuit for you to be able to use your stove safely.

<><><>

Most electric stoves require a special, dedicated circuit to supply 240 Volts AC and wiring and circuit breakers for either 30 or 50 amps. The outlets are quite distinctive and would not be mistaken for a "regular" plug.

"Dedicated" means (in this case) that only the one outlet exists for that circuit, and it has its own circuit breaker or fuses.

Receptacles for different voltages and for different current-carrying capabilities (amp ratings) have different configurations so that we cannot easily connect a plug to a wrong outlet.

You can see illustrations of some of these configurations by clicking the Related Link shown below.

Go to your home's breaker panel and look for a 2 pole 40 amp breaker. If you see one - assuming you already know what they look like - then chances are the house is wired for a range. So you then need to look for the cable run and find its outlet, if it has one. If you don't see one and you want to use your range then you'll need call a licensed electrician to check for - and, if necessary, install - the correct size of cable run and stove receptacle.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.
