depending on the complexity of the model, 512mb should be the bare minimum for any kind of professional solution. however there are cards out there with 1-4Gb which would be much more valuable to you.
If you are doing any kinds of professional 3d or even 2d modeling, you should look into workstation graphics cards. these are much more expensive but will yield much better results. they are optimized for applications such as CAD Solidworks and Maya
