Down syndrome is a genetically-transmitted disease cause by the presence of part or all of an extra 21st chromosome. We can't blame this one on the drugs. However, drug use (incoluding alcohol) while pregnant could complicate the issue with developmental problems.

I always remind people that if they use drugs during late-stage pregnancy, the child will be born with an addiction. Whether or not its later life is affected, the baby will have to withdraw from the drug during the first few days of life. Hell of a way to start your presence on the planet, wouldn't you say?

Yes it can... It also can cause the child to have other disabilities too. It can damage the child's brain.. like being born 85 percent cocaine.. it could also lead to the child being bord premature

The above answer is totally false. Down syndrome is caused by a third copy on chromosome 21 and is present at conception or shortly after. It is mostly a random (and relatively common) occurrence, unless it is of the translocation type which is rare and genetic. While smoking and drinking during pregnancy can cause other problems, they cannot cause Down syndrome. Please do not post answers here unless you know what you're talking about.

The exact causes of Downs Syndrome are not known clearly but Downs tends to occur with older (36+) mothers. It does not seem to have any direct association with drugs but drugs can certainly do many types of harm including reproductive damage.

Down Syndrome is a genetic problem dealing with chromosomes. Not drug problems. But your baby can die or get many worse complications than Down Syndrome. == ==

Can medications - such as Valium or Xanax - cause Down syndrome?

Nobody really knows exactly what causes Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is a condition where a baby is born with an extra chromosome in their DNA. There is some evidence that says having a baby at an older age (40 and above) may have a higher risk of having a Down Syndrome baby. Taking medicines cannot cause you to develop Down Syndrome, because it's something you are born with; however, taking addictive drugs while you are pregnant does cause serious damage in the unborn baby, and many babies born to alcoholics and drug addicts have brain damage. There is a possibility that Down Syndrome could occur if the chromosomes are damaged.
