If you have insurance which allows you to drive any vheicle that does not belong to you but if you borrow a car off a friend does his car have to be insured for you to drive thanks?

Answer

The kind of Insurance you are speaking of is a Named non-owners policy. His car needs to have insurance too. It is illegal to drive a car without insurance (for that car) The driver and owner could get a ticket for the vehicle not being insured.
