SSI is Supplemental Security Income. SSI benefits aren't taxable. For this reason, Social Security Administration doesn't report your benefit amount to the IRS. That's also why they don't send you a 1099 or another income information reporting form. Also you don't pay state income taxes on SSI benefits

Do you have to file state income taxes?

Presuming you live in a State with an income tax and have the qualifying income, of course you do.Now, common sense, if you don't have the requirement to file, because the government says you don't have to --- what do you think - they do that because it's good for you? Or them?THE ONLY TIME YOU REALLY WANT TO FILE, IS WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE TO!Thats when it can only do you good.

If your only income is Social Security do you need to file tax returns?

Perhaps. It depends on whether you have enough non-Social Security income to be required to file an income tax return. Also, for 2007 and, possibly, 2008, you may qualify for an economic stimulus rebate, but only if you file a return. You can find a form on the internet or at the library. Just because IRS didn't send you a form, doesn't mean you are exempt from filing.

Can social security income be taxed in the year you are turning sixty six?

Yes it can and it also can be taxable every year after you turn sixty five. Age will never relive you from having to file income taxes. If someone tells you that you no longer have to file taxes after a certain age, they do not know what they are talking about. You can be 106 and still have to file income tax returns. Having income below the required amount is the only reason you may not have to file taxes in a particular year. You can also not be required to file one or more years then have to start back again.

What if you do not file a tax return?

If you had no earned income, or you were, perhaps receiving SSI benefits as your only income, then there is no need to file a tax return. However, if you had earned income and make it a habit to not file, it will eventually catch up with you and could be the result of an audit and you owing the IRS.
