If your teddy bear hamster just had her first litter of pups is there anything you need to do now? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Keep the cage clean, give her nutritious hamster food and clean water and don't let the cage area get cold. If there is a male in the cage, separate them. Males will often kill the babies. Otherwise, she knows what to do!
Answer
Do NOT touch the babies until they have hair! If she feels they are threatened in any way she will eat them.
Answer
Most pet supply stores sell a multivitamin you can put in the water bottle for pregnant and nursing hamsters and their babies. A very important addition to the new mommy's diet is animal protein of some kind. If she is deficient in protein, she may eat her babies. Feed her small amounts of well-cooked chicken, mealworms (recommended) or hard-boiled egg. And since it's her first litter, she's likely to be VERY uptight and nervous about her babies, just as you're likely excited to look at them and talk to them. Try to refrain from unnecessary noise or movement. DO NOT disturb the nest in any way, even to clean it.First answer by anonymous. Last edit by Chasej. Contributor trust: 97 [recommend contributor].
