Time is very important in A Christmas Carol, which is structurally centered around distinct elements of Past, Present, and Future. But, the time scheme of the story itself seems to make little sense. On Christmas Eve, Jacob Marley's ghost tells Scrooge that he will be visited by three ghosts on three successive nights. On Christmas morning, Scrooge awakes, having already been visited by all three ghosts. The three nights seem to be compressed into a single night. The presence of the spirits apparently bends the normal flow of time. A view further supported b y the fact that Scrooge goes to bed at two o'clock in the morning after Marley's visitation and awakes at midnight the same night--two hours after he fell asleep. Dickens uses the tem poral inconsistencies to emphasize the supernatural powers of the spirits--when they are around, normal earthly standards, including the flow of time, have no effect.

Marley's chains are a symbol. Not seen in the films or the stage plays but in the book the chain is constructed of links of money safes, ledgers , banking books all symbolise what was important in Marley's life time

Examples of this are Marley's chains. In nearly every film and stage performances that chains are large and heavy draped around the moaning Marly. In the book the chains are made up of safes, ledgers money bags etc all the things that were the great part of Marley's life

Ebenezer Scrooge's own headstone bears on the name - In reality most would carry an epitaph, a term of endearment for the loss of a loved one, no so for Scrooge and of course the use of the two children named Want and Ignorance produced from beneath the robes of the Ghost of Christmas Present. When Scrooge sees their emaciated bodies he asks the Ghost "whose children are they?" the ghost response is thundered "They are mans" , Scrooge ; "Have they no resource" meaning have they no one to care for them? the Ghost simply replies "Are there no prisons, are there no work houses". This is a direct quote from Scrooge in Stave one to the two gentlemen seeking a small charitable donation to assist the poor at that time of year

One example is using the 2 children (Ignorance the boy and Want the girl) who were hidden beneath the Ghost of Christmas Present's robe - Scrooge asks him if the children are his and is rebuked with "they are man's" and it is explained that both want and ignorance are failings, yet Ignorance is the most dangerous of the two.

While many have their own interpretations about the light on the Ghost of Christmas Past (from saying it represents the holiday season, the blessed star) I think it represents the characteristics and emotions of someone's past such as love and compassion.

While some might say that the cap the ghost wears that hides the light represents unkindness, cruelty, selfishness, greed and the option of removing/hiding away those memories; I think the cap represents the wrong and bad choices one has made in the past.
